Do you have a little horse lover in the house? When I wa a kid, I devoured every horse-related TV and movie that ever came out. No, really…I have probably seen every horse show and movie released before 1992. Going back to the 50’s, y’all…that’s how serious I am.
Of course, back then, I had to catch episodes of Mr. Ed on Nick at Nite. Now, I feel like everything is available whenever you want to watch it. Which is awesome if you’re a kid!
Here are some fun horse TV shows for kids {updated in April 2020 with some recommendations from my 10-year-old horse crazy niece!}.
Horse TV Shows for Kids
- Spirit Riding Free (Netflix) – Brand-new to Netflix, kids can join Spirit’s son, also of the Cimarron, as he frolics through adventures with his new friends, Lucky, Abigail and Pru.
- Spirit Riding Free: Pony Tails (Netflix)
- Spirit Riding Free: Christmas Spirit (Netflix)
- Pony Sitter Club (Netflix)
- Free Rein (Netflix)
- Mia & Me (Netflix) – Mia has an enchanted book that lets her travel to the magical world of Centopia. The shows starts off in the real world and then becomes animated when Mia joins her Centopian friends (which include a unicorn!). The second season is full of horses, riding and friends.
- Barbie: A Pony Tail (Netflix)
- Horseland (Amazon, Netflix) – This cartoon is full of cute characters, pretty horses, and fun horseshow scenes.
- The Saddle Club (DVDs available on Amazon) – Based on the popular book series (which, of course, I read as quickly as they were released), this live action series follows best friends Lisa, Carol and Stevie as they learn important life lessons at their local barn, Pine Hollow.
- Mr. Ed (DVDs on Amazon) – I mean…a talking horse.
- My Little Pony (Netflix) – Not gonna lie. If this is on, I’ll sit and watch it with my daughter. It’s funny, smart and cute.

I just love the animation – Spirit.
Thanks for sharing with us.
my wife has just completed a book call The Unwanted Pony. It’s a Wonderful story and met for kids 6 to 12. Wonderfully illustrated.
We do not have a Mailing or any marketing tools other than an old large list of horse owners.
After you see the book might you be interested in the marketing rights and take it from here?

Hi there is one programme that I personally think is really good and it is on Netflix. It’s name is Heartland
I’ve been wanting to watch that!
Free reign! Netflix 🙂
Oooh, I need to watch that one!
On Youtube you can find all three seasons of the The Silver Brumby about a band of wild horses living in Australia. There’s also on Youtube The Adventures of Unico and Unico in the Island of Magic about a baby unicorn that fights evil.
Ohhh I think I remember The Silver Brumby! Thank you for sharing!
In the 1960s I LOVED “My Friend Flicka” and “Fury.”
Yes! My Friend Flicka was amazing. And I never watched Fury, but the book was probably one of my all-time favorite horse books as a kid.
Definitely free rein!
What about My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic ?
Another good one!
Ponysitters on Netflix, Black Beauty, Cowgirls and Angels 1 & 2, Dreamer, American Girl: Saige, As merican Girl: Felicity, Misty, Red Fury, Gift Horse, Adventures of Black Beauty (so many other great shows!)
Ponysitters sounds like a fun one – I’ll have to check it out!
Looking to find a horse book, movie, toy that are for little BOY. They all seem to be girl related. He’s only 3!!
My favorite horse story of all time that is about a horse and a boy is The Black Stallion. That might be a little old for him right now, but the main character is a boy and those books are fantastic. The author wrote books for younger children that also feature a boy and his pony and I highly recommend. The book “Little Black, a Pony” is perfect for a 3-year old! You could also look for Breyer model horses, as they are appropriate for all kids (there is even a Black Stallion one!).
