Easy DIY Yarn Tassel Garland

I’ve updated this post and put it on my craft site, Easy Crafts 101, with printable instructions – click here to visit that page!

I don’t knit, or crochet, or have any skill set in those areas. But yarn is just so FUN, right?! I see it and I want to buy it, even though I really don’t know what to do with it. I’ve kind of been wanting a yarn tassel garland for awhile now, and I almost bought one at the craft store…until I realized that there was some assembly required. I figured if there was assembly required, I’d might as well make it myself (after all, these cute yarn apple pom poms came out perfect!).

It was super simple to make and turned out exactly as I’d hoped.

Here’s what you need to make your own (some of these are affiliate links):

  • Yarn, any color(s) you choose – I think I got all of mine at Walmart (but check out the yarn below…did you know Vanna White had a yarn brand? I did not know this!)
  • Twine or cute ribbon to hang your tassels from
  • Sharp scissors
  • A hardcover book

Choose a hardcover book to wrap your yarn around. You can get an idea for the size I used here (side note: I collect vintage horse books, and this is a favorite!). Wrapping the yarn lengthwise would have created a longer tassel. Wrap your yarn around the book 60-70 times (more for a fluffier tassel, less for a thinner tassel).

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandOnce you’ve wrapped the yarn round as many times as you’d like, take your (sharp!) scissors and cut the yarn free, like in the picture below.

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandYou’ll have a big bunch of yarn now. Pull out one piece. This will be used to tie around the yarn.

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandTie the loose piece around the bunch, creating a loop at the top. Make sure you tie this tight. I double knotted mine.

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandGrab an end of yarn from the skein (I am such a yarn newbie, I had to Google that word to know how to pronounce it). Wrap it around, over the piece that you have tied, leaving the end loose (don’t wrap over it) and making a band around the loop. Make this as wide or as narrow as you’d like. I probably wrapped it around 15-20 times or so.

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandOnce you’re happy with this, cut the yarn and knot the ends tightly. If you leave the ends long enough, you can let them hang and become part of the tassel.

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandShake the tassel out to see how it falls, ans cut off any long ends. I ended up trimming this one quite a bit.

Easy DIY Yarn Tassel GarlandI used a really cute rope ribbon I found at the craft store to hang my garland from.
