DIY Planner Paper Clips

I have about a gazillion planners, notebooks, actual books, and stacks of paper around me at any given moment. They are all important (to me, they are…my husband would tell me to learn how to consolidate). All of these books are in use, and I am always searching through them for the page I was on last, my most recent notes, etc.

DIY Planner PaperclipsSo, making a few DIY planner paper clips has been on my to-do list for, oh, EONS. But the time to actually sit down and make them has eluded me. A couple of days ago, I got so tired of staring at my bowl full of paper clips that I finally made myself sit down and make them and OMG.

They. Are. Adorable.

I knew I was holding onto that olive ribbon for something!DIY Planner Paper Clips

They are *so* cute, they’d make a perfect gift for a fellow planner lover or a teacher.

They were ridiculously easy to make, but I thought I’d run you through the steps anyway – I think I figured out the best way to hot glue the ribbons, and I’ll share that here (and also, this can be your warning that hot glue is HOT. Ask my fingertip, which is currently hiding under two throbbing blisters, the result of hot glue gone wrong).

DSC_0462-7Here’s what you need to make your own planner paper clips:

  • Paper clips. I suppose any will do, but I used 2″ colored one (like these). I think mine are from the Dollar Store.
  • Glue gun
  • Embellishments (buttons, sequins, you name it!)
  • Ribbon (I used several grosgrain ribbons I had around the house, cut into 5″ pieces – these look really cute!)

Just glue your embellishments to the paper clips.

DIY Paper ClipsAnd here’s how I made the ribbon paper clips:

Cut your ribbon into 5″ pieces. Fold it over and loop through your paperclip.

DIY Planner Paper ClipsDon’t pull the ends tight…instead, leave a little space for the glue, and then glue a dab of glue onto the ribbon like in the picture below.

Pull the ends tight, hold for a second while the glue sets, and then move on to the next one!

And my planners? And books, and notebooks, and stack of paper?

Hot glue! I’ve always wondered how those ribbons would stay on the paperclips, but never actually went through the trouble to look it up (I’m pretty rough on paperclips as it is, let alone adding ribbon to them – but this would solve that, ha!). I have some cute reindeer ribbon that I’m sad to only have out at Christmas time (reindeer can count as normal deer the rest of the year, right?) and will have to try this out! 😀

These are adorable! My daughter is a hot glue junkie. I can see her going on a paper clip frenzy with this. Thanks for the great idea! Liking you on Facebook!

Wow these are so simple and so so pretty! Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I love them! I want to make a million of these!

If you have time, I would love for you to come and share this post over at the Really Crafty link party that is live right now! (

These are super cute! I make planner clips all the time – they are so fun. Have a great week!

Such a great idea, I love stuff like this.
Thanks for sharing.

Love your project. Perfect for journals & planners. Pinned & shared. Thanks for joining the Inspiration Spotlight party.

Super cute! Would make a great teacher appreciation week gift for teachers.

they all looks adorable indeed. I love the colors and pretty patterns make the clips look cheerful. Great idea..

I love these!!! If I use the jumbo size paper clips do I have to use a certain size of ribbon? Can I use different sizes? Sooooo cute!!!!!
Thank you!

It was absolutely delish!! Thanks for a great idea that I’ll definitely use again – hopefully next time with the actual kale and bacon. 🙂 One question – is the nutrition info at the end meant for one serving or all four? The carb count seems high for a single serving, given that a whole large sweet potato has around 40 carbs. But if I’ve miscounted somewhere, please let me know. Thanks again!

Really only a deep thinker like you could come out with such wonderful ideas. Great analysis and in-depth thinking. The accuracy and detailed explanation is something which differentiates your piece of work from others.Cloud Consulting Services
