DIY Cinco de Mayo Party

DIY Cinco de Mayo Party

When I asked my friend Cheryl at Cheryl Elizabeth Craft for some creative May inspirations, I should’ve known that she would go all out and create her own completely DIY Cinco de Mayo party.  Like, for reals.  I’ve known Cheryl since college (which is well over a decade ago…shhhhh) and she has always been so crafty that I could never keep up – so I just usually bring the food or wine to “contribute” 😉  I am more than excited to share all of her fun ideas with everyone today!  I mean, who doesn’t love a good crafting party…with tequila?!

Decorative Maraca Making

Tequila Gummy Worms

Matcha & Jalapeno Margaritas

Matcha Horchatas

Cinco de Mayo is the historical event of an important victory the Mexican army had over the French army, and it’s mostly observed in Mexico near the site of the original battle place in 1862. In the US, it’s a holiday that represents the celebration of Mexican culture. My favorite part of Mexican culture is when music, art, food and drink collaborate together, especially when there is something to celebrate.

My husband and I bought all of our party food ingredients at the local Vallarta near our house. We got our prepared pico de gallo, salsa, refried beans and rice from the deli counter. We picked out a few amazing desserts from the wall of pan dulce (those delicious looking sweet breads). We gathered enough produce to last us beyond the party and my husband even attempted Spanish at the meat counter, which ended in us bringing home 1-out-of-2 of the meats we thought we ordered. It did not matter though, because trying new or even unidentifiable things is fun! We assembled enough food to make a street corn salad, traditional 7-layered bean dip, and pastry dish for the party.

For drinks I made everything with Matcha! Even though it’s not a Mexican creation, Matcha green tea is everywhere right now.  It’s healthy, delicious and super easy to add to almost anything. As long as you have all your ingredients together in advance, the cocktail is quick to assemble, but if you want to make your drink extra crafty, try infusing jalapenos in your tequila over night. Or you can do what I did and make tequila soaked gummy worms!

Matcha is a great way to add healthy benefits to your drinks.

I’m not a big tequila lover, but I can appreciate it’s purpose. The famous tequila worm is a fascinating part of tequila’s history, so I thought it would be fun to make my own “tequila worm” by soaking the gummy version in tequila for 5 hours. The worms are a fun garnish to add to the margaritas and tasty enough to eat as candy. The recipe calls for a small amount of booze, but you might want to have some alcohol-free worms too.

Using the same Matcha power, I added rice & almond milk in a blender to make Matcha Horchata! It’s a nice addition for mixed groups or kids and it tastes really good!

For the main event, I took a very simple idea and designed it to be universal and functional. Music is universal and a HUGE part of Mexican culture. It’s also ageless. Both kids and adults can make music. So, I took a kid’s craft project of making maracas out of plastic Easter eggs & spoons and hyped it up to make a Maraca Craft Bar! My guests were able to paint, feather and gem their own set of maracas, turn them into works of art or use them for music.  The trick is to buy quick drying craft paint & foam blocks so guests can work on the project while they continue to eat & drink. Maracas create happiness instantly and by the end of the party my friends were shimmy-shaking their maracas all over my place. We had a blast! I would recommend this party idea to anyone who wants to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by being creative with your friends!

These DIY maracas are so fun & easy – let your kids paint them, too!
