This summer, something kind of magical has happened in our household. My son started to love books.
I’m a huge reader. I have always loved to read, and as a kid I always had my nose buried in a book (and as an adult, I blame *way* too many late nights on good books!). I shouldn’t be surprised that my kid loves to read, but…I kind of am.
For the last two years now, I’ve been working with Jack on his required reading for school. He dreaded it. He never wanted to read with me, even though I could see that his reading was improving. So when school got out this summer, I just kind of let it go and didn’t push the books. At a friend’s recommendation, though, I bought him a book called Diary of a Minecraft Zombie.
He devoured it. He read it in one sitting, and then read it again.
So I bought him more books, all about subjects he loves (mostly, Minecraft, World War II, and old war aircraft). He’ll tell you that he doesn’t want to read, but in his bed he’s got a stash of five or six books that he reads over and over again. So with this newfound love for reading, I thought I’d ask Jack to help with this post.
Here’s a list of books for second grade boys that you child *probably* hasn’t read yet.

- Diary of a Minecraft Zombie – in this series, readers follow a Minecraft zombie (who is eleven-years-old and apparently hilarious) through his daily adventures.
- World War II Pilots: An Interactive History Adventure (“You Choose” series) – Remember Choose Your Own Adventure? These books are similar. This is Jack’s favorite one.
- Stink the Inredible Shrinking Kid
- I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor (“I Survived” series) – Another engaging and interesting read, Jack has asked for more books in this series.
- Nate the Great
- Illustrated Stories from the Greek Myths
- 10 True Tales: World War I Heroes
- Mummies in the Morning
Zenni Optical, an online glasses shop, encourages families to read and enjoy books together. They inspired me to step outside the box and think of a fun way to keep my son excited about summer reading. Print out your own copy of these free bookmarks below for your little reader!
Zenni offers prescription glasses (and non-prescription, and sunglasses) at a super affordable price. I bought a pair of back-up glasses from Zenni (I couldn’t afford a second pair, previously!) and my husband finally relaced his old glasses with new Zenni ones, too. They have tons of cute, on-trend styles to choose from – including lots of options for kids!
I’m giving away a $50 Zenni Optical Gift Card to one lucky reader – you can enter below (must be 18+ to enter, contest open to US residents only).
