I’m a runner.  It has taken me a long time to say that.  Actually, at the date of writing, it has taken me 56 days to stake the claim that I am a runner.  Do you run?  Then you’re a runner.  Are you fast?  Do you go far?  Doesn’t matter.  If you run, you are a runner.  But everybody has to start somewhere, right?  I started 56 days ago, and I started with a simple run streak.  I decided I wanted to be a runner and see what my body could do, so I did.  And you can, too!

What’s a run streak?

It is literally exactly what it sounds like – a series of days in a row where you run without skipping a day.  I joined a streak and devoted myself to running every single day between Thanksgiving day and New Year’s Day (that’s 42 days, friends!) – and I committed to running at least a mile a day.  Some days I ran just one mile, but sometimes I ran longer and I even ran four 5ks during that time (that’s an average of one every ten days!).  My next goal?  To run a 5k every month for all of 2019.  And I’ll do it, too.  You know why?  Goalsetting and visualization.

How can I set running goals?

The idea of running every single day for the foreseeable future and running twelve 5ks in a year (for a non-runner that had literally run one 5k in her entire life!) was overwhelming.  It was a huge goal and it felt insurmountable.  I didn’t know where to start.  But when I broke it down into smaller goals and achievements, I knew it was something I could totally do.

Goalsetting in general is a good thing!  And I would go so far as to say that goalsetting for runners is crucial and an integral part of the activity.  Let’s be honest – there will be many days when Netflix or a good book or work or family activities will make it hard for you to tug on your yoga pants, put your earbuds in, and step away for a few minutes to run.  There will be days when it’s raining and the last thing you want to do is go traipsing through the puddles.  This is where your goals and your commitment to them come into play and be tested.  Without a goal (say, to run for 30 days straight), there is no reason to slip out into the rain and get your mile in – nobody is forcing you to do it.  And sometimes you need a visual reminder of what your goal is so that you can see it and be confronted with it on the days when you don’t feel like getting out there. That’s where a run streak printable planner insert like this comes in handy!

What is a running checklist?

For me, having a checklist that I could mark off every day and see my progress was crucial.  As I got further and further into my streak and saw all the days that I had laced up my shoes to run crossed off, my confidence grew, and I knew I could continue the streak.  And the feeling of accomplishment I had when I finished all 42 days was so great that I, like Forrest Gump, just kept running.  My running checklist represents 42 days of running in below freezing weather, on holidays, before parties, after dark, and during rainstorms.  It represents running with my dog and my kids and sometimes my husband.  And it is a visual representation that I am a runner.

I want you to have that feeling, too!

So, I created a 30-Day Run Streak Printable for you.  Just print it out and put it in your planner, on your fridge, on your bathroom mirror – anywhere you will see it during the day.  Allow it to encourage and affirm you as you check off each day.  And, who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with running and continue your streak way beyond 30 days.

PS – if you pass a runner with hot pink knee-high socks and gigantic headphones, wave to me!  I’ll see you out there.
