My mom has been making this salad dressing for us since I was a kid. And before that, her mom made it for her…and her grandmother before. So I’ve been eating it for awhile. Only recently, though, did I ask for the recipe and find out how easy it was to make!
And since I’m currently using the 21 Day Fix to help measure out my portions and be smart about my food, I thought I’d refresh this recipe a bit to make it a 21 Day Fix Ranch Dressing.

21 Day Fix Ranch Dressing
{random side note…my mom grew up calling this “Western Dressing” – which is to say, it’s not quite Ranch, but I’m not really sure why…all I know is that I love it, it’s easy to make, and with these little tweaks it’s WW and 21 Day Fix-friendly!}
Can I have Ranch Dressing on the 21 Day Fix?
Yes! The trick is to find a clean, whole foods recipe.
Although some store-bought salad dressings are approved, the list is few and far between due to all of the preservatives and crappy ingredients that get added. So, stick with a homemade version and you’ll be fine.
What container is Ranch dressing on the 21 Day Fix?
That will depend on your recipe. Some recipes, like this one from my friend Stephanie over at The Foodie and the Fix, count as a red. The recipe you see here is an orange container because it uses buttermilk. Each recipe will be different based on the ingredients used to create them.
It’s best never to assume. Always check the ingredients against your list of containers so you can see which ones to track for every recipe. Again, this one counts as an Orange on Portion Fix and 21 Day Fix because of the buttermilk!
Is there a low point Weight Watchers Ranch Dressing?
Yes, my friend, and you have found it here. However, it’s important to note that ONE SERVING is one points on all three plans. If you were to eat the whole thing, it would be more than that. So be honest with yourself when tracking how much you’re eating! But also you’re probably not going to eat the whole recipe in one sitting, so…
If you want to make this into a zero point recipe on all three plans you can consider doing the following:
- Use fat free versions of the dairy products. It will knock the points down considerably on all plans. That being said, I can’t vouch for how it will taste without any fat in the diary products since I don’t make it that way!
To make the 21 Day Fix Ranch Dressing Seasoning:
Here’s the list of ingredients we’ll use to make the ranch dressing seasoning which is then mixed in with our went ingredients. You can also use this seasoning for other things like dip, seasoning meat, and more!
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons dehydrated parsley flakes
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
To make this homemade ranch dressing you’ll need:
- 3-1/2 teaspoons 21 Day Fix Dressing Mix (you should have plenty left over for another batch – seal this up and stick it in your spice drawer for later!)
- 1 cup reduced fat Greek yogurt (if you’re not on the 21 Day Fix or following Weight Watchers, you can use sour cream)
- 1 cup low-fat buttermilk

I hope you love it!
This looks amazing! I’m always looking for yummy Ranch Dressing substitutes! Can’t wait to try it 🙂
I hope you like it, Liz!
How do you get the 21 day ranch mix though??
Do you mean the seasoning mix? This is it:
1 teaspoon salt (this amount of salt is so small, and broken out into 15 servings, that I am okay with it – I always use Himalayan Sea Salt)
4 teaspoons dehydrated parsley flakes
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
Make sure that you do NOT use vanilla yogurt!! It is not very good????
Oh nooooo! lol!
Hi! What is the shelf life for this dressing??
I usually keep it for a week (if we don’t eat it all first!).
How long will this stay good? I just made some and it’s awesome btw!
So glad you like it! It should be good for up to a week. Mine usually doen’t last that long! 🙂
How many points would it be if you used light or fat free sour cream? I have been making a similar recipe for several years, but using lite sour cream.
Melissa, I’m not sure! I’ll have to figure it out! I think if you have the WW app you can input the recipe and it will tell you.
I don’t care for buttermilk. Is it possible to use a low fat milk?
The buttermilk is really what makes it tangy…you could definitely try it with regular milk but I feel like it would lose its tang.
I’m excited to try this! Trying to convert a recipe[e somewhere else to be fix friendly, do you know what the exchange rate for one cup of buttermilk is for the containers? thank you!
Not off the top of my head, but here’s a great reference to help you figure out containers for foods that aren’t on the list: https://thefoodieandthefix.com/21-day-fix-container-guide-free-printable/
What kind of buttermilk do you buy?
Hi Liz,
First, I made this dressing and was amazed at how much like ranch it tastes!!! I wasn’t even upset that it’s not what I normally have 🙂 Next, on here you say that 2Tbsp=1 orange container. On your post for the 21DF BLTA Ranch Tacos, you have the dressing listed as 2 Tbsp=1/2 orange container. Just curious as to which to go by? Thank you!
Hi Shaina! So glad you liked the ranch – my mom’s been making it since I was a kid! The correct measurement is 1/2 an orange container. Thank you so much for catching that – I will fix it right now!
Hi there, I am new to weight watchers. I was wondering with the buttermilk in this, it’s still 0 points? I’ve joined for my son who loves Ranch, and trying to find a free Ranch dressing for him. He’s on the blue. Thank you
Hi Cindy! Thank you for checking. The points have changed (again!) and I have not updated this recipe yet. A serving would now be 3 points on the blue plan. I will update the post!
